Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) is a digital payments app launched by the Indian Prime Minister. And based on Unified Payment Interface (UPI), you can now use BHIM app for making payments using Aadhaar cards.
In other words, BHIM users can now accept and send money using their 12-digit Aadhaar card number. In addition to using Aadhaar as a mode of payment, you can still continue to use the previous payment gateways like mobile wallets, bank accounts, and credit/debit cards for transactions.

What is BHIM UPI PIN

When using BHIM to make payments, a UPI PIN needs to be entered to authorize the payment, which is a 4 digit passcode. Moreover, with BHIM you also need to feed in a password before opening the app on your mobile. Entering passcode to open the app adds to the security and hence reduces the chances of fraud.

How to setup UPI PIN

Keep your debit card handy to set up the UPI PIN on your mobile to be able to use BHIM app. follow the steps below to know the process:
  1. Enter the passcode to open BHIM app on your mobile
  2. Click on Bank Account
  3. Cick on Reset UPI PIN
  4. Enter the last 6 six digits of your debit card number and the validity of the debit card
  5. You will receive an OTP. enter the OPT in the respective field and click on Submit
  6. Set the desired UPI PIN and click on Submit

Using BHIM App For Making Payments Using Aadhaar

The government recently integrated the Aadhaar payment feature in BHIM app. One of the best features of the Aadhaar payment mode is that there is no need for the user to first get registered with his/her bank or with UPI to use his/her Aadhaar card for funds transaction. Follow the steps below to know how this feature works:
  1. Log in to your BHIM app
  2. Enter four-digit PIN to access the main menu
  3. Click on Send Money
  4. Click on the three dots on the top right corner of the page for Over Flow Menu
  5. Click on Aadhaar Pay
  6. Enter the 12-digit Aadhaar card number of the recipient (to use Aadhaar number, it is vital that the receiver's Aadhaar card is linked to his bank account)
  7. Enter the UPI PIN or Virtual Payment Address (VPA) to complete the transaction

Factors to keep in mind for using BHIM for making payments

  • It is vital to link the Aadhaar card to your bank account to make and accept payments. In case your Aadhaar number is not linked with your bank account, you cannot send money to the receiver.
  • There is no requirement for the beneficiarys name when using BHIM to make payments through Aadhaar number. This helps in keeping the Aadhar number away from being misused. Hence, it is advised to double check the Aadhaar number when using it for payments.
