Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is a mobile based payment program which lets you do the financial transaction without using your card or bank account details each time. To use UPI, you will need a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) which is like an email ID.

  1. Download the banks UPI app from the Play store
  2. Install the app on your smartphone
  3. After installation, open the app and click on registration
  4. Enter your bank details and mobile number for once and for all
  5. Based on the above details, your UPI ID will be created
  6. Use the UPI ID to make or receive payments

  • Your bank details are required only once, i.e. during registering for UPI, after which, you only have to provide your UPI ID or VPA for transferring. There is no need to provide IFSC code, bank account number, or passwords for any transaction.
  • You do not have to wait to add the payee before you can transfer money. The funds are credited/debited immediately from the respective accounts
  • You can transfer up to Rs. 1 lakh in every transaction
  • UPI works on the IMPS system and hence is available 24x7
  • Transactions can be made with anyone who has a UPI ID
  • The UPI app has a money collector feature which sends a notification to your debtor as a payment reminder. The moment the debtor approves the notification, the debt amount is credited to your account
  • UPI app also work as mobile wallets and hence can be used to make purchases both offline and online, recharge mobile or DTH subscriptions, paying utility bills, in addition to paying or receiving money
  • It is not necessary that you use the UPI app offered by your bank. There are many UPI apps like SBI UPI, ICICI UPI, and BHIM and you can use the one which suits you most in terms of usability and interface
  • For instance, though you have an ICICI bank account, you can still use an HDFC UPI app, and even link your various bank accounts with it
  • Using UPI services is free currently, but it might be charged with 0.50 in future
Although there are numerous alternative mobile payments platforms available, UPI app is emerging swiftly. Moreover, the demonetization move by the government, where INR 500 and INR 1000 notes were banned as legal tenders, has given UPI a significant push in respect to usage.
